Golf Has Changed … And Traditional Courses Still Don’t Get It.

Golf over the last few years has experienced one of the biggest shifts the sport has ever seen.

What was once viewed as an elite environment built around professionals, private clubs and strict traditions has now become far more mainstream, social and experience-driven.

And whether traditional golf likes it or not, the game has changed.

For years golfers had the PGA Tour and European Tour to keep us occupied throughout the season. The way golf was positioned globally felt distant for many people — almost like a closed world reserved for elite players, expensive memberships and polished etiquette.

Most people admired golf from the outside looking in.

Then came LIV Golf.

Then came Netflix’s Full Swing. Watch it here, https://www.netflix.com/gb/title/81483353

Suddenly golf became personal.

Fans weren’t just watching scorecards anymore. They were seeing personalities, friendships, pressure, humour, emotions and behind-the-scenes realities that made golf feel human again.

The perception shifted overnight.

Golf suddenly felt achievable.

But the biggest change hasn’t just been how golf is watched.

It’s how golf is played.

Of course there will always be players who focus on:

  • handicaps

  • competitions

  • medals

  • leagues

  • score improvement

That side of golf will never disappear.

But for a huge wave of newer golfers, especially younger players and social golfers, the game is becoming more about:

  • the experience

  • the banter

  • getting outdoors

  • meeting people

  • creating moments

  • escaping everyday life for a few hours

For many players now, the scorecard isn’t even the main reason they play. The social side is.! That shift in mindset is massive. One concern traditional golfers often raise is pace of play. Slower golfers can disrupt rhythm around the course and frustrate regular members.

But the reality is simple: every golfer started somewhere. Golf can’t continue growing if new players feel unwelcome the moment they step onto a course. The bigger opportunity most golf clubs are still failing to recognise is what this new audience actually represents: revenue, visibility and long-term sustainability.

Too many traditional courses still:

  • overcomplicate memberships

  • lack flexibility

  • ignore off-peak opportunities

  • fail to create social golf experiences

  • market only to existing golfers instead of new ones

And in doing so, many are missing huge opportunities to increase footfall and grow the next generation of golfers.

Golf is evolving beyond tradition. The courses, brands and communities that embrace this new experience-led era will thrive. Those stuck protecting old models may struggle to keep up.

Because golf today isn’t just about competition anymore. It’s about connection.

And honestly?

Golf is more exciting now than it’s ever been. The unpredictability of the game, the highs and lows, the good rounds and terrible rounds - that’s what makes golf addictive. But even bad golf feels better when shared with other people.

That’s the future of the game and the data and research predicts so.

More experiences.
More connections.
More golf.
